Timing Belt Repairs in Long Beach, CA

Timing Belts Can Fail Without Warning

An essential element to internal combustion engines, timing belts (or cam belts) control the engine's valves. If your engine has an overhead camshaft, then your car uses timing belts. Typically made of a rubber polymer material, the timing belts of today replaced noisier chains that were used in the 1970s and 1980s. Over the past decade, however, chains are becoming more popular again due to their durability. BMW, for one, is known for using timing chains rather than belts. The main drawback of traditional timing belts is their lack of durability, which requires regular replacements. Stay on top of these important parts by referring to your owner's manual to determine when yours need to be replaced. If you need timing belt repairs, visit the experts at ACA Automotive in Long Beach, CA.

How Timing Belts Work

The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft in order to maintain the proper timing between them (the crankshaft makes two revolutions for every turn of the camshaft). Most engines have anywhere between one to four camshafts, which help the intake and exhaust valves open and close. The movement of the valves and the pistons need to be synchronized in order for the engine to run properly. The two types of engines that use timing belts are interference and non-interference engines. The main difference in the engines is their distance and location between the valves and the pistons. If the timing belt slips even slightly on an interference engine, it will likely cause serious and expensive damage to the engine. In non-interference engines, this extreme damage is a rarity, but the engine may come to a halt if the belt fails.

The cost of a timing belt replacement pales in comparison to the cost of a failed engine. But it's important to note that there are no warning signs for a timing belt failure, so the best way to prevent this is by having your belts checked at regular intervals.
